The Hotel Adlon calls itself “the home of timeless luxury” on its website. So should King Charles III. and his wife Queen Consort Camilla see it that way. They will probably stay there for two nights during their three-day visit to Germany.
They share the taste of the late Queen Elizabeth II, as she has also slept in the Royal Suite several times. Among other things, the two incumbent royals will find a king-size bed there, and from there they can look directly at the Brandenburg Gate, the landmark of Berlin.
The Adlon is located right on Pariser Platz in the heart of the city, next door to the famous Madame Tussauds wax museum. But Charles and Camilla will not have time for that, their schedule is tight.
The 185 square meter suite is therefore more likely to be used for relaxation. A butler is available 24 hours a day, there is a private dining room and sauna. There is also a black grand piano with a signed picture of the Queen and Prince Philip hanging above it. The accommodation should cost at least 20,000 euros per night, as reported by the DPA.
The hotel was built in 1907 and was something special even then, as the specialist magazine “Entwicklungsstadt” reports: “Families of the high nobility sold their winter palaces in Berlin in order to reside in the suites of the hotel. Even Wilhelm II fled the drafty rooms of his castle in the luxurious and well-heated rooms of the ‘Adlon’.”
At that time, electricity and running, warm water in all guest rooms offered particular comfort. That wasn’t standard at the time. During the Second World War, the hotel was initially used as a military hospital before it was destroyed by fire a few days before the end of the war. A wing was the only thing left.
The hotel was completely rebuilt in the 1990s and reopened in 1997, the distinctive style was retained – and to this day fascinates celebrities and other wealthy people.
