Modern televisions usually come onto the market as smart devices. The portals of streaming services are often pre-installed, and some manufacturers even install a Netflix button on their remote controls. But what about the devices of previous generations? Many older HD or HD-ready televisions are still in pristine condition and generally meet the needs of their owners – if it weren’t for the lack of streaming functions. How to make your old TV a little smarter.
So-called TV sticks are available from around 35 euros and their installation could hardly be easier: you plug them into the HDMI connection, use the remote control supplied to navigate to the WLAN connection and follow the instructions on the screen. If the television is so old that it does not have a digital HDMI connection, an additional adapter is required. An “HDMI to Chinch” adapter or an HDMI multiple converter even allows you to set up your streaming portals on tube TVs, as Amazon teased in a promotional video for its TV stick.
A streaming box is also usually connected via the HDMI connection of your television set. However, the devices, which range in price from around 60 to several hundred euros, are often equipped with additional connection options. There is also the option of connecting them directly to the Internet via Ethernet cable, which means higher transfer rates and better picture quality. This can make a real difference, especially when it comes to online gaming. In addition, high-quality IPTV boxes come with additional practical extras, such as the option of using the device as a WiFi repeater.
Upgrading your old TV with a TV stick should be enough for most series junkies. The only requirement is a stable WLAN connection to play content from Amazon Prime Video, Disney, Netflix or from the media libraries via the older flash box. All those who do not yet have a smart TV with high picture quality are advised to use a streaming box connected via an internet cable. Alternatively, owners of modern gaming consoles can use it as a streaming box and install the appropriate apps there. In any case, before buying a device, you should be clear about your individual requirements and needs before you reach for a suitable TV stick or streaming box.
