Along with the design of the invitation cards, Buckingham Palace recently released the names of the page honours, who were honored with King Charles III. and his wife Camilla will accompany him during the coronation procession on May 6th. Among them is – unsurprisingly – Charles’ grandson Prince George. But another name stands out. Lord Oliver Cholmondeley will also be among the boys who will wear the king’s robes.

Cholmondeley is the son of the Margravine of Cholmondeley (pronounced Chumley), Rose Hanbury. The spicy thing: she was said to have had an affair with Prince William about four years ago. At the time, Hanbury was a neighbor of William and Kate. And according to British media reports, the two women did not get along well at the time.

The Margravine and the Duchess have become bitter rivals, wrote the “Daily Mail” and the “Sun” in 2019. However, the newspapers did not discuss exactly why. It was said only that Kate had asked William to “phase out” the friendship.

The shock for Royal fans came a little later. The US gossip newspaper “InTouch”, which often makes headlines with absurd stories, headlined: “William cheats on Kate with her girlfriend!” A quarrel with the neighbors suddenly turned into affair rumors – and the British press, otherwise not known for their subtlety, kept a relatively low profile. The US web magazine “The Daily Beast” shed light on what was happening behind the scenes a little later.

Giles Coren, renowned restaurant critic and editor of the “Times of London” wrote on Twitter: “Yes, it’s an affair. I haven’t read the text, but I know about the affair. Everyone knows about the affair, darling.” He deleted the tweet a little later – under pressure from the palace, as “Daily Beast” suggested at the time.

But the entanglements don’t end there: Coren is a good friend of Tom Parker Bowles, Camilla’s son. Coren recently spoke out in favor of Parker Bowles, who will also play a role in the coronation ceremony. “I think he’s seen the worst that the press, the media and public opinion can do to a person and thinks he can handle anything,” he told The Times.

It remains a mystery whether there was any truth to the affair rumors or whether they could be counted as court whispers. The fact that the young Lord Cholmondeley will accompany King Charles on May 6 should nevertheless be a topic of conversation.
