As a woman, one is often confronted with the question of when one thinks of having children. Whether one wants to have children still plays a subordinate role for the questioners. In an interview with “People” magazine, the actress Heather Graham clearly positioned herself on her decision against children and speaks from the heart of some women.
She is 53 years old and does not regret having remained childless. In the interview, she says: “I think we all walk different paths. You just have to accept where you are. If I had any children, that would have been cool for sure. But at the moment, since I don’t have children, I feel I free myself. And I get a lot of sleep. That’s pretty awesome.”
In society, women are still compulsively assigned the role of mother, and Graham feels that too, and rebels: “I have the feeling that as a woman, culturally, you’re not allowed to say: ‘I didn’t want to have children’.” A problem that apparently affects women more often than men, according to the 53-year-old: “I think as a man it’s more like: ‘Oh yes, cool, you didn’t want to have children’. Meanwhile, women are becoming more free to make their own decisions hold true.”
Heather Graham loves her job and has also started working behind the camera. “I don’t feel like I’m missing anything,” she says. “I sometimes feel like my projects are like little kids. That’s how I started to get more involved in producing, writing and directing.” Graham also admits that the change in professional perspective is not so easy for her: “It’s difficult, but it fulfills me”.
What fascinates the actress most about screenwriting and working behind the camera is being able to tell stories: “It’s really exciting to be able to tell a story that you really care about”.
