As part of the Artemis mission, NASA sent humans to the moon for the first time since 1972. The crew of four is scheduled to land on our Trabant in 2025. They should then be able to communicate with each other and with the earth via a 4G/LTE network provided by Nokia. The equipment is to be sent to the moon with a SpaceX flight in 2023.

The exact launch date has not yet been set. But during the MWC mobile communications fair in Barcelona, ​​Nokia’s chief engineer Luis Maestro Ruiz de Termino said it would be ready in the coming months. Nasa and Nokia book a place on the SpaceX mission “Dear Moon” for their project. This is a six-day moon circumnavigation private flight by Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa and his crew of eight artists and creatives.

According to Nokia, the aim is to show that terrestrial networks are also suitable for use in space, as reported by the American news portal “CNBC”. Accordingly, the Nokia system should be sent to the moon during the orbit of the SpaceX rocket and land autonomously in the southern lunar region of Shackleton Crater.

The 4G network plays a decisive role in NASA’s future plans: In the future, rovers on the moon will be remotely controlled via LTE signal and video, image and telemetry data will be transmitted to earth in real time. The Americans also plan to build a research settlement on the moon by the end of the decade.

For November 2024, NASA is planning its own manned moon orbit (Mission Artemis 2), in which further preparations for the first moon landing since 1972 will be made. A good year later, in December 2025, according to current plans, the time has come: For the first time since astronaut Harrison Schmitt on December 14, 1972, a human being will land on the moon. A total of twelve people walked the moon between 1969 and 1972. As part of Artemis 3, four people will be added, including the first woman.
