Prince Harry’s time in the British Army takes up a large part of his autobiography, Spare. The ex-Royal speaks in detail about his training as a pilot and his time in the Afghan war. And apparently Harry shouldn’t be the only member of the royal family who should fight against the Taliban there.
As General Sir Mike Jackson recounts in The Real Crown, the late Queen Elizabeth II wanted her grandson Prince William to serve in Afghanistan. Jackson says he had an extensive conversation with the late monarch. “What goes on in these audiences and who says what to whom is up to the two people involved, and I’m going to break the rule that I won’t reveal what’s going on on that one occasion,” he says aloud in the documentary “Daily Mail”. “She was very clear,” reveals the former British Army general. “My grandchildren took my shilling, so they must do their duty,” he quoted the late Queen as saying.
In the end, the decision was made not to let William fight in Afghanistan. “It was decided that for William, as heir to the throne, the risk was too great. But for his younger brother, the risk was acceptable,” Jackson said.
Harry’s time at the front had a strong impact on the 38-year-old. In his book he also talks about the competitive relationship with William, which was intensified by the Afghanistan mission. According to Harry, William had a hard time not being able to fight the Taliban like his younger brother. Instead, the heir to the throne made a pilot training for the search and rescue service. “He saved lives every week, which I think was quite remarkable, vital work,” Harry writes in his autobiography.
Sir Mike Jackson also reveals that William “absolutely” wanted to go to Afghanistan.
