Very few cinema critics expected this success: “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” grossed around 346 million euros worldwide in the first five days after its release. In doing so, he broke several records.

The film tells the story of two brothers, Mario and Luigi, who open a plumbing business in Brooklyn, New York. As they climb into a sewer to fix plumbing, they are sucked into a mysterious pipe and separated from each other. Both end up in strange worlds where they meet other Nintendo characters.

Although “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” received rather poor reviews beforehand, families around the world flocked to cinemas over the Easter weekend to see the film. In the USA alone, it brought in around 187 million euros. According to surveys, 59 percent of viewers were male and 45 percent were between 18 and 34 years old.

“Mario” had the most successful theatrical release of all time in both the video game film adaptation category and the animated film category. Previously, the respective record holders were “Warcraft” and “Frozen 2”.
