She resigns after almost six years: Britta Ernst (62), the wife of Chancellor Olaf Scholz (64), resigns from her position as Brandenburg’s Minister of Education. This was announced by a spokeswoman for the state government of Brandenburg on Monday – so far without giving reasons. Her successor has already been determined with the previous State Secretary Steffen Freiberg (41).

The politician took up her position as Minister of Education in Brandenburg under the government of Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (61) in 2017. She had previously been Minister for Schools and Education in Schleswig-Holstein.

Ernst and Scholz have been married since 1998. The two met in Hamburg in the mid-1980s. In an interview, the incumbent Chancellor once stated that he owed his wife a great deal. “I think I would be a completely different person if I wasn’t married to Britta Ernst.” He had become a “clearly” better person through her, he said in July 2021 in the “Brigitte live” series of talks.
