In the 8:00 a.m. edition of the “Tagesschau” there was a small mistake on Monday, which Judith Rakers (47) skilfully covered up. She confidently grabbed a hand microphone because her lapel microphone no longer worked.
Shortly after the start of the broadcast, there was no more sound during a contribution. Within seconds, however, Rakers was outfitted with a handheld mic. When she was seen again, she explained: “From what I’m hearing right now, we don’t have any sound, so I’m going to go old school with this microphone.
After the broadcast, Rakers described on Twitter how the glitch could have happened. “If you get up at 3 a.m. for the early shift and then a breakdown occurs because of a defective battery on the lapel microphone,” wrote the “Tagesschau” spokeswoman for a screenshot on which she can be seen with the hand microphone. “Interestingly, makes you much more alert than coffee.” When asked by a user whether there were any replacement clip-on microphones, the 47-year-old explained: “Not during the current show…”
Several viewers also commented on the breakdown. Some Twitter users agreed that Rakers, as always, handled it with aplomb.
“And that on Monday morning,” one user also noted. “Comes back to the ESC performance with the show microphone,” said another. NDR2 moderator Jens Mahrhold commented similarly: “… at first glance I thought it was a secret ESC application.” Apparently, the presenter can at least sing. Responding to the comment “When I use this Haverie microphone, I always think that a ‘SingStar’ session will start right away,” Rakers replied with a wink: “I thought about it for a moment too. I really like singing karaoke…”
