Fatih Akin’s gangster drama “Rheingold” has won the Bavarian Film Prize for best film. “This film is relevant, opens our eyes and ears and entertains us brilliantly,” the jury explained its decision. In the feature film, Akin describes the life of the Iranian-born rapper Xatar – from his flight to Germany through poverty, crime and imprisonment to his rise as a rapper and producer.
The film producers and sisters Alexandra and Meike Kordes won in the “Family Entertainment” category with their children’s film “The School of Magical Animals 2”. “It is a heartwarming film with humor, excitement and depth for young and old,” said the jury.
Markus Söder (CSU) presented the prime minister’s honorary award to the Munich director and actor Michael Bully Herbig. The acting awards went to Anna Maria Mühe for her role in “The Story of a Family” and to Florian David Fitz for his roles in “Wochendrebellen” and “Oskar’s Dress”.

The Free State has been awarding the film prize since 1979. This year prize money totaling 300,000 euros was awarded in eleven categories. The selection was made by an expert jury with ten members.
