Will the Terminator become US President after becoming Governor of California? If it were up to Arnold Schwarzenegger (75) himself, he would immediately throw his hat in the ring as a candidate for the highest political office in the USA. According to “Entertainment Weekly”, the former bodybuilder and action star once again told CNN journalist Chris Wallace that he could “of course” imagine the presidency.
“I think the field was wide open in 2016. And I think the field is open now too,” Schwarzenegger said of his possible chances of winning. “Think about it,” said the native Austrian to Wallace, “there isn’t really one person who could unite everyone”. His candidacy is a so-called “no-brainer”: “Throw me in, I see so clearly that I could win this election.” He is a good candidate because Americans are looking for someone who can ease the growing political tensions in the country.
“It’s like me and California: When I ran for governor, it was clear that people were looking for a new answer, not a right wing or a left wing. But someone who could bring the nation together and who does not see the other party as an enemy,” explains Schwarzenegger. There are “just so many things” that could and should be done: “Yes, we can do it.”
Schwarzenegger served as governor of the US state of California from 2003 to 2011 and ran for the Republicans at the time. During his tenure, he made himself popular because he largely avoided party skirmishes and also rallied supposed political opponents of the Democrats around him. He has toyed with the idea of running for the US presidency for many years. However, the US Constitution has so far thwarted his plans: A US President not only has to have US citizenship – like Schwarzenegger – but also be born on US territory.
