The British monarchy is currently in crisis. Theories and rumors about the condition of Princess Kate, who had to undergo abdominal surgery in January, are increasing, especially on social networks. Many royal fans are surprised that they don’t receive more information and wonder why Catherine has to take so long to recover. The royals’ communication strategy is also coming under increasing criticism.

Prince William currently has no head for the rumor mill. William’s spokesman told People magazine that the heir to the throne was focused on his work, “not on social media.” Only last week did the palace feel compelled to make a short statement. “Kensington Palace made it clear in January how long the princess’ recovery would take and that we would only provide important updates,” a royal representative told Page Six. “That still applies today.” The princess is doing well, according to the palace.

In the cover story of People magazine, royal expert Sally Bedell Smith was critical of the current state of the monarchy. “Everyone feels unsettled by uncertainty and there is too much uncertainty surrounding the monarchy at the moment. Queen Elizabeth used to say: ‘I must be seen to be believed’. It is important for Charles and his reign that the public knows a little more,” said Bedell Smith.

In Great Britain, however, it is a member of the Middleton clan who speaks out. Of all people, Kate’s uncle Gary Goldsmith, Carole Middleton’s brother, recently moved into the British “Celebrity Big Brother” house and was directly asked by his housemates about his famous niece. Goldsmith said he wanted to wait until the palace itself made a statement. But the princess is receiving the best medical treatment possible, he also said. “She’s number one in the royal family for a reason and I just implore people to give her some space,” Goldsmith said.

However, it is questionable whether Goldsmith is the right person when it comes to information about the royal family. He is considered the black sheep in Catherine’s family clan. In 2017, he was fined after admitting to drunkenly attacking his fourth wife. The judge called Kate’s uncle a “disgusting drunk.”
