At the end of 2020, pop singer Nicole received the bad news: two malignant tumors were discovered in her right breast. A year-long battle against cancer with operations, chemotherapy and radiation followed, and the musician also lost her hair.
“The world stopped for me. It really hit me, the full program,” the 58-year-old recalls in an interview with the “Berliner Morgenpost” at the moment of the diagnosis. The pop singer, who was the first German representative to win the Grand Prix in 1982 with the song “A Little Peace”, is now considered cured – and can also be on stage again. Last year she released a new album, aptly titled I’m Back. Her tour begins in September.
“I’m a fighter,” Nicole explained to the “Berliner Morgenpost”. “I knew I wasn’t going to resign like this. I fought the disease from day one.” And her fight has paid off: last summer her doctor told her that she was cancer-free. “You did it,” he is said to have told the singer, whose full name is Nicole Seibert, at the time.
Nicole also explained why she made the disease public in spring 2022 – almost a year and a half after the diagnosis. At that time, she had informed the public with an Instagram post. In doing so, she wanted to forestall the reporting of the “Bild” newspaper: “I knew they were on to the story.” At that point, the illness was already over. “I didn’t want any sympathy, I didn’t want to move anyone to tears either. It’s almost a miracle that nothing has been made public for over a year. The friends kept their mouths shut, the whole village was silent,” says Nicole.
