After the US film company Warner Bros. announced in 2017 that action star Dwayne Johnson (51) would be starring in a film adaptation of the superhero character “Black Adam” from the DC Comics cosmos, expectations were high. When the film finally hit theaters in 2022, however, sales fell well short of studio bosses’ expectations. As a result, the contracts with Johnson were terminated and plans for a sequel scrapped.
In the talk show “Hart to Heart” by actor Kevin Hart (44), “The Rock” was again disappointed with this decision and explained his view of the failure of “Black Adam”. In his view, the flop has to do mainly with the change in leadership at DC, which took place during the ongoing production of the film.
Speaking on the show, Johnson said, “There have been so many leadership changes. Any time a company of this magnitude, especially a public company, makes management changes like that, you have people making creative and financial decisions that you interact with yourself disagree.” The project was “caught up in the whirlpool” of this new leadership, and the project was “shut down a little” due to delays related to the Covid pandemic.
Despite his criticism, the former professional wrestler emphasized that he takes the company’s decision as a sport: “It’s like a new owner buying an NFL team and saying, ‘Fine. Not my head coach. Not my quarterback. It doesn’t matter how many times we’ve won the Super Bowl. It doesn’t matter how many rings we have. I’ll take someone else.'”
