The honor of leading the bride down the aisle at a wedding traditionally falls to the father. It was different with Sheri James. She let the doctors lead her down the aisle, who play a large part in the fact that the 70-year-old is still alive.
James was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer two years ago. “It was a shock to get a diagnosis like that,” she told the Washington Post. Treatment with chemotherapy and radiation followed at a clinic in Texas, where the medical team cared for her competently and sensitively. Today, James is lucky in two ways: She beat cancer and is now married to her partner Bill, who is seven years older than her.
When planning the wedding, it quickly became clear to her that she wanted to be guided down the aisle by two medical professionals who played a key role in her treatment and healing process. The oncologist Dr. Van Morris and Dr. Emma Holliday received this honor. “I couldn’t imagine getting married without her,” Sheri James told Good Morning America. “They just had to be there. I had to ask them.”
And the two doctors didn’t have to think twice. “Unfortunately, as oncologists, we get more invitations to funerals than to weddings,” said Emma Holliday. “It was a wonderful celebration and to say I will never forget it doesn’t do it justice.” Her colleague Van Morris said it was the simplest question any cancer patient had ever asked him.
Sheri James and her husband Bill had only been dating when she was diagnosed with cancer. The couple met online, but Sheri wanted to break up with her partner after the diagnosis so “he could be free and do the things he wanted.” Bill, however, wanted nothing to do with it. “I’m not going anywhere,” he replied, Sheri James told the Washington Post. The couple got engaged in January and are now happily married and hopefully have many healthy years ahead of them.
