After the death of Franz Beckenbauer (1945-2024) at the beginning of the year, the football legend is to be honored with a statue in Munich. The Kurt Landauer Foundation, which is named after the former president of FC Bayern, announced this on April 21st. The statue of Emperor Franz will be placed directly next to the recently erected one by Gerd Müller (1945-2021) on the esplanade in front of the Allianz Arena.
“The emperor will shine in bronze on a base in the shape of the Bavarian diamond, 1.5 times his life size – and of course in his incomparably elegant pose as the conductor of the game,” explains the Kurt Landauer Foundation on its website. At the same time, donations for the project are being called for. Both FC Bayern Munich and the family of the deceased would support the project.
The Kurt Landauer Foundation is also behind the Gerd Müller statue mentioned above. The memorial on the esplanade in front of the Bayern Stadium shows the “Bomber of the Nation,” who died in the summer of 2021, also one and a half times life size. It was revealed in September last year. According to the foundation, Beckenbauer’s statue could be erected next to it in as little as a year and a half.
Beckenbauer died on January 7, 2024 at the age of 78.
