The Prado, a journey of 200 years
The Spanish museums close by 2019 with a total figure of around 20 million visits. The Meadow has finished the year with 3.203.417 visitors, a new record of people who come to the center to stroll through the permanent collection and the temporary exhibitions. This is an increase of the 10,73%, thanks to the glories of the Bicentennial. The sample Velázquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer. Looks like-minded it has been the most watched in 2019 in the Meadow, with 441.665 people. A figure much higher than the one achieved by Fra Angelico and the beginnings of the Renaissance in Florence, with 280.143, and generated by the memorial Museum of the Prado 1819-2019. The growth of this museum it is a symptom shared by the majority of the lockers in the museums of spain that grow above 17 million entries submitted, and underline 2019 as one of the best vintages of visits.
The Prado had a daily average of 8.849 visitors in the year that has ended, being the 20 of April (Holy Saturday) the day of maximum inflow, a day on which the institution received 14.333 people. In 2019, the museum reached an amount close to the € 22.7 million in revenues from ticket sales (record amount in this concept). Despite this, both the free entry as the entry in schedule of gratuity has grown a lot and added 1.4 million visits without pay, 8.7% more than last year. The 57,9% of the visitors were non residents in Spain and 42.1% of residents (the highest value of the five years).
The Museo Reina Sofia grows 12% and leaves a record of 4.425.699 visitors. Only 38.7% of that figure corresponds to the number of visits to the headquarters, 1.714.049 people. The free space of the Parque del Retiro assume 61.3% of the total number of visitors: in the Crystal Palace entered 1.994.979 people and in the Palace of Velázquez, 716.671. Since the institution make it clear that the 67% of the total visits to the main headquarters are free. In 2019, the museum added five million euros in box office for sale of tickets, a 3% more than 2018. Although it provides no figures, the museum ensures that exhibition with a greater reception from the public has been the starring the from malaga, Rogelio López Cuenca, in spite of the attention that he dedicated to the japanese Tetsuya Ishida.
Punch in the National Heritage
More than 5.6 million people in total have visited the palaces and monasteries real (3.4 million people) and natural areas (2.2 million visits) managed by National Heritage. The historic ensemble of the Royal Palace of Madrid has received 1.547.967 visits, a slight increase of 0.01% compared to the previous year. The institution, however, has lost public this 2019 in the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Madrid), the Real sitio de La Granja and Riofrío (Segovia), the Royal Site of Aranjuez, the Prince’s Garden in Aranjuez, the Garden of the Island, also in Aranjuez, the gardens of La Granja de San Ildefonso (Segovia, spain) and the Campo del Moro (Madrid). Despite the interest generated by the exhumation of Francisco Franco, the Valley of the Fallen lost 16% of visitors in 2019: 318.248 in front of the 378.875 2018.
In the absence of confirmed figures for the month of December, the 16 state museums (including the Museo Casa Cervantes, the Sorolla Museum or the Museo del Greco) added more than 2.5 million visitors.
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao lost visits over the previous year, when it recorded more than 1.2 million, but it marks the fourth-best record of its history, to the close of 2019 with 1.170.669 people, of which nearly 69% are foreign. The most busy was A look back: Giorgio Morandi and the old masters, seen by 702.010 people, between April and October. Since the institution ensure that the activity of the museum has contributed 438,5 million euros to the GDP and 67.9 million euros of additional revenue to the Public Treasuries Basque.
The 1.034.941 visitors who passed by the office of the National Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza is an important growth spurt of 11.5% with respect to 2018, when it is recorded 927.907. Little by little, this museum surpasses the worst data of his history, 850.496 visitors in 2017, although it is far from his best mark (1.255.281, in 2012). The temporary exhibition most visited was not the one dedicated to Balthus, in spite of the anticipation, but the starring the relationships between Balenciaga and the Spanish painting. The first reached 122.529 visitors and the other 154.234. The first appointment with the personal collection of Francesca Thyssen, with the works of Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Tomás Saraceno, added 18.658 visits.
The National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC) joined 835.164 visitors, a drop of 6.3% with respect to 2018, when they responded to the institution of the mountain of Montjuïc, a total of 891.346 people. One of the attractions of the museum is the permanent collection, but this year the exhibitions are visited have been Oriol Maspons, photography useful (still in progress), with 64.154 visitors, followed by Fabrés, with 45.302, and Bermejo, with 41.081. Between the three do not add up to the 197.589 visitors who came in 2018 to see the temporary devoted to William Morris and to Gala and Salvador Dalí.
CaixaForum Madrid received more than 719.000 visitors, with the exhibition most visited Toulouse-Lautrec and spirit of Montmartre. CaixaForum Barcelona reached the 674.594 the past year, and the most visited was Velázquez and the Golden Century.
The Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA) has received 357.029 visitors in 2019. This figure representing an improvement of 7.6% with regard to 2018 (25.335 more people). The exhibition dedicated to the artist Jaume Plensa was the most-watched, with 118.623 entries. The Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao, sum 250.742 people, a slight drop of 2,000 people compared to the previous year, despite samples as significant as that of Zuloaga (1870-1945). The origin of visitors is inverted with respect to the Guggenheim Museum: the 42.6% of them are neighbours of the Basque Country. Throughout 2019, they say, the museum has received donations of works of art worth more than two million euros. For its part, the IVAM of Valencia is the institution’s fastest-growing, to exceed 210,000 people, an increase of 23.5% (in 2018 were to 170,000).
