From May 22nd, Disney subscribers can stream a new German series. Then all six episodes of “Pauline” will appear on the streaming service. What’s on offer is a highly entertaining horror series, smart and often funny, with a brilliant leading actress.
19-year-old Pauline (Sira-Anna Faal, 24) is about to graduate from high school when she unexpectedly and unintentionally becomes pregnant after a one-night stand arranged on a dating app. She doesn’t want to have anything to do with Lukas (Ludger Bökelmann, 22), the father of her unborn child. However, Pauline can always rely on her best friend Tony (Lukas Alexander von Horbatschewsky, 23). He also supports her in her planned abortion.
Things get a little more complicated when the mysterious-looking Luke reveals to the pregnant woman that he is actually the devil’s son in the flesh. The young student subsequently develops supernatural powers, discovers previously hidden worlds, and finds herself in the middle of an epic battle between good and evil.
The streaming series “Pauline” features a whole range of fresh new faces who embody the show’s main teenage characters. Actress and rapper Sira-Anna Faal, who has previously appeared in “SOKO Leipzig” and was seen in the film “The Ordinaries”, shines in the leading role.
Her best friend Tony is played by Lukas Alexander von Horbatschewsky, known, among other things, from the Netflix film “Paradise”. Lukas actor Ludger Bökelmann, on the other hand, already appeared in the Netflix hit series “Dark”.
Some well-known, established German actors also appeared in front of the camera for “Pauline”. For example, the well-known former “Tatort” detective Andrea Sawatzki (61) plays the character Lilith, while “The Kangaroo Chronicles” star Dimitrij Schaad (38) embodies the demon Tammo.
The Cologne-based bildundtonfabrik, which also produced the Netflix series “How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)”, is responsible for the production of “Pauline”.
The new show “Pauline” offers viewers a breathtaking, successful mix of genres. A lot is told here about the reality of life for today’s teenagers in Germany – between dating apps, the widely available Internet and TikTok videos that supposedly convey knowledge about the world. At the same time, the main character Pauline comes from difficult social backgrounds and lives in a kind of suburban ghetto, where her single mother Carla (Nikeata Thompson, 43) takes loving care of her.
From this social realism, the showrunners Philipp Käßbohrer (40) and Matthias Murmann (40) as well as the directing trio Arabella Bartsch, Facundo Scalerandi (38) and Alma Buddecke develop a supernatural horror story that in places is reminiscent of genre classics such as “Rosemary’s Baby”.
Above all, “Pauline” lives from the strong characters, and above all the main actress Faal, who convincingly embodies a rather unusual female protagonist. Pauline is not a constant smiler who wants to please everyone, but has her own mind, knows what she wants and usually gets it.
