After almost a year out due to injury, Peter Gulacsi returns to goal at RB Leipzig. Coach Marco Rose confirmed that the 33-year-old will play in the first round of the cup against SV Wehen Wiesbaden on Wednesday (8.45 p.m./ARD and Sky).
Defending champion Leipzig will rotate in a few positions with the second division team. It is still unclear whether Timo Werner will be used. The striker had to miss training due to back pain.
“We’re integrating Pete little by little. It’s nothing more for now,” said Rose, pointing to Janis Blaswich as the clear number one. “Pete is making his comeback after eleven or twelve months. This is an important moment. Everything that lags behind is competition. But I won’t change the goalkeeper every three days. We are very well positioned at the moment.”
Long injury break
Gulacsi tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on October 5, 2022 against Celtic Glasgow in the tenth minute without any outside influence. After an inaccurate back pass from Timo Werner, Gulacsi got stuck in the grass during the rescue operation and had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher.
After the first operation, the Hungarian national goalkeeper had to undergo another procedure in January due to a bacterial infection.
