Note: This article contains spoilers about Far Cry 6’s ending and Far Cry 3’s story. To keep spoilers for FC6 to a minimum, we will not reveal any additional details. However, if you are keen to know as much as possible about the story of Far Cry 3, then stop reading.
Fans have been speculating for a while that Far Cry 6 will bring back Vaas, the fan-favorite antagonist of Far Cry 3. Vaas is the Far Cry villain who has been the most iconic. He is charismatic, frightening, and ruthless and has some long, fun bad guy monologues. Rumours that Vaas would be returning to Far Cry 6 have been around for over a year. Michael Mando, actor, suggested that he might reprise the role.
Ubisoft announced earlier this year Vaas and Far Cry 4 villain Pagan Min, and Far Cry 5 villain Joseph Seed would all be playable characters in Far Cry 6’s post-launch DLC expansion. As it turns out there is more to the Vaas story that what’s going on in the expansion. It seems dreamlike and could possibly exist outside of Far Cry 6 “real world.”
You’ll get a post-credits scene if you complete Far Cry 6’s story campaign. In it, you will be fighting a successful guerrilla battle against Anton Castillo in the fictional island nation of Yara. A black screen Metal Gear Solid-style is displayed, where you can hear two people conversing. Juan Cortez is the guerrilla mentor to protagonist Dani Rojas. Vaas is the other, raising many questions about Far Cry 6’s relationship with Far Cry 3 and what the post credits scene is hinting at for the future.
Let’s start with some facts and debunking. There were many theories that Far Cry 6 was set before Far Cry 3. Some speculated that it would be a prequel. Others thought that Diego Castillo, Armond’s son, would become Vaas. Diego’s experiences as the son a dictator and a target of a revolution would shape his life and eventually lead him to become a murderous drug-smuggling pirate. Far Cry 6 would be able to connect to Vaas’s story without having to deal with the one major issue when bringing back the character: Vaas died in Far Cry 3.

What does this mean for Vaas?
We are trying to avoid spoilers for Far Cry 6, but we will be discussing what happens after the credits scene.
Although there are no visuals of the scene, it seems like Juan is meeting Vaas at a dock to make a business deal. Juan claims that Castillo’s deposal has tripled the production of Viviro (a life-saving drug for cancer) which Castillo used slave labor to grow. Vaas sounds like a black market contact. Juan is selling Viviro, and Vaas is purchasing it. He’s also a Far Cry 3 pirate and drug smuggler. Vaas mentions Diego in the discussion. It is clear that they are two distinct people.
It’s unclear if this scene and Far Cry 6 overall take place before or after Far Cry 3. If it is before, Vaas could just have been a smuggler who sold Viviro and other drugs to Jason before he was killed in Far Cry 3. If it is after, then that means Vaas must have survived what looked like his death at the hands FC3 protagonist Jason. This seems possible since Vaas’ battle against Jason in Far Cry 6 was a dream-like vision with no indication that it was real. Far Cry 6 doesn’t provide enough information to be able to tell us when it happened.
Ubisoft’s Far Cry timeline puts FC3 before FC6 and Vaas is still alive. This scene also offers some clues about the future for Yara. This scene raises questions about Juan’s motivations as Libertad freedom fighters. However, this is not the first time that he has been morally questionable throughout Far Cry 3. It also suggests Dani’s potential enemies in the future as multiple forces fight for control of Viviro’s lucrative production industry. This suggests that Vaas is still a criminal and pirate who may be working for himself rather than for a higher boss like Far Cry 3. Although we don’t know much about Juan’s and Vaas’s relationship, it is likely that their unscrupulous dealings aren’t good news in a country that has just overthrown a dictator and is without a stable government.
What’s next for Vaas? Far Cry 6’s character Vaas will play depends on how he is incorporated into Far Cry 6’s story, or if he will even be there. After you have finished the game, FC6 can be played again. You will need to fight Castillo’s military reservists who act as an insurgency. As you root out Castillo’s loyalists each week, new targets will appear. This expansion along with the DLC expansion suggests that we might see more of the story about Yara in the future. Juan has been interacting with Vaas so he could be part of the story. We might see him as a villain or in another capacity opposite Dani in post release content.
However, it is possible that the post-credits scene was a tease of a Far Cry sequel and serves only to establish the fact that Vaas still exists, and is out there smuggling drugs. It’s evident that Far Cry will see more Vaas in the future.
