In recent years dermatologists and pharmacists have pointed to the sun as the great enemy of the skin. In summer, the rays are more powerful and, in general, the exposure is much more common. That is why it is time to bring out all the heavy artillery and, along with sun creams, there is a product that is increasingly recommended by experts to increase protection: solar nutricosmetics.
Mónica Collel, co-founder of Inbe-UTY, explains that “sun supplements are usually formulated based on plant components such as beta-carotene and vitamins, which neutralize the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation, visible and infrared light, in all types skin and at any age. Due to their antioxidant properties, they also prevent and improve actinic damage (DNA damage suffered by cells due to sun exposure), stains, premature aging and maintain skin health.
Doctors Mira Cueto summarize them as follows:
– Protects from photoaging and oxidative damage.
– Reduces redness and the inflammatory reaction of the skin.
– Regulates the immune response of the skin.
– Decreases cellular DNA damage.
– Improves skin recovery.
– Reduces the risk of burns.
– Reduces the risk of skin cancer.
– Offers eye protection.
Years ago, solar nutricosmetics were used to promote tanning and prolong it. Nowadays it is recommended, preferably, to protect the skin and strengthen it. Dr. Verónica López Couso, dermatologist at the International Dermatological Clinic, assures that “supplements are indicated for all people, including the pediatric population. But, above all, for those people with a history of skin cancer, sensitive phototypes, allergies and intolerances to the sun, also for those who consume photosensitive medications, and those who have prolonged exposure to the sun.
Mónica Collel also recommends solar nutricosmetics for “people who are concerned about the aging of their skin, since the ‘best anti-aging treatment’ is ‘prevention’ and correct sun protection is the best preventive therapy”.
In the case of children, the dermatologist Verónica López Couso explains that it is recommended mainly “from the age of 4, in light phototypes to protect from radiation and prevent future spots on the skin. Knowing that the sun is necessary to process vitamin D and bone metabolism, among others, the little ones must be exposed but always safely and these nutricosmetics offer the best solution for them to play in the sun in peace.”
It is important to keep in mind that nutricosmetics will never replace topical protection. That is, it is always a complement to sun creams. It can be taken all year round, especially if outdoor activities are carried out. But the usual thing is that it is taken, mainly, in spring and summer, the months in which sun exposure is greater. The best time to take oral supplements is, according to experts, half an hour before exposure.
When purchasing any food supplement, it is important to ensure that it complies with European health regulations. Mónica Collel, co-founder of Inbe-UTY, recommends «let yourself be advised by a specialist professional since there is a wide variety of products. Depending on their formulation, they can be more aimed at a person who has spots and wants to avoid them, if they are a person with a skin disease or are an athlete who performs their activity outdoors.
Dr. Verónica López Couso adds that “the main thing is that they contain powerful antioxidants (polyphenols), such as Polipodium leucotomos or resveratrol, which protect cells and DNA from sun damage. Nowadays, the solar capsules have been reinforced according to the needs of each patient, adding vitamins, probiotics, minerals, nutrients…».
