Many years after the end of his active cycling career, Jan Ullrich (49) openly confessed to doping for the first time. “Yes, I did dope, yes,” he explained, among other things, in an interview with “Bild”. The German sports star was confronted with it for the first time in 1996 when he was still a young professional.
After several conversations, he knew at the time: “Cycling has a massive problem – but it has been there for a long time.” He was therefore concerned with “equal opportunities”. “Bild TV” would like to show the entire conversation with the former professional cyclist on Sunday.
According to consistent media reports, Ullrich said he was “guilty” at the presentation of the new documentary series “Jan Ullrich – The Hunted” in Munich. And he also feels guilty. In 2007 he ended his career after being involved in a doping scandal. The streaming service Amazon Prime Video is now showing the four episodes of the documentary from November 28th – shortly before Ullrich’s 50th birthday.
The first teaser for the documentary series caused a stir back in July. “I felt really bad too,” explains Ullrich. “I did cocaine in large quantities. I drank whiskey like water.” Looking at the past, he says: “20 years later you realize the mistakes you made. […] Now it’s time to tell my story, the whole story.” Ullrich unpacks the documentary “comprehensively, honestly and exclusively,” as it was said in a press release a few weeks ago.
