Music star Christina Aguilera has released a new clip for her hit “Beautiful” 20 years after the first video was released. In it, the 41-year-old declares war on false ideals of beauty on social media: “Today it’s more difficult than ever to hear our own voice when so many others are invading our feeds and minds with their ambiguous messages,” Aguilera wrote on Instagram .
With “Beautiful” Aguilera landed a hymn of self-love in the LGBTQ community in 2002 – years before inclusion was part of the zeitgeist. The English abbreviation LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans people, queer and intersex people.
The new video no longer shows desperate teenagers, but children who first stare at their smartphones and later wipe the plastic surgery markings off their faces and then play together again. At the end of the video, a bleeding smartphone lies on the ground, and it says: “Social media has changed the relationship with our bodies.” That has to change.
