The “Education Trend 2021” caused a stir this week with alarming findings: The study commissioned by the Conference of Ministers of Education showed that the negative trend in the German education system has continued to intensify. The skills of the fourth graders in the subjects German and mathematics have deteriorated again compared to the results of 2011 and 2016.
It was not without a certain irony that ZDF also confirmed the impression that German language skills were on the decline. Ironically, the public broadcaster made a spelling mistake in its reporting on the education trend. In math, the German students did not reach the “minimum standard”, it was to be read there – but the correct spelling is “minimum standard” according to the Duden.
Of course, mistakes can always happen – but many viewers take a closer look at public broadcasting, which is currently being criticized after a few scandals. After all, the broadcasters financed by the broadcasting contribution are explicitly given an educational mandate by the legislature.
