The Ukrainian writer Serhij Schadan (48) was awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade at the end of the Frankfurt Book Fair. The award ceremony took place in the Paulskirche in Frankfurt am Main. The writer Sasha Marianna Salzmann (37) gave the eulogy for Schadan and praised the style of her colleague. He was “always in the midst of his people”. He speaks and writes, so to speak, “from their lungs”.
At the end of June, the German Book Trade Association announced the award for Schadan in a statement. He was honored for “his outstanding artistic work and for his humanitarian attitude” with which he turned to the people in the war and helped them at the risk of his life. Born near Luhansk, Schadan lives in Kharkiv and was an activist in the 2004 Orange Revolution in Kyiv.
