Shortly before the 1st of Advent, the post office in Great Britain came up with something special – and it’s also a bit bizarre: The Royal Mail surprises some of its customers in the run-up to Christmas with “singing mailboxes”. As the postal company announced, letterboxes in London, Swansea, Glasgow and Belfast have been fitted with a mechanism that plays Christmas carols when mail is dropped.
The classic red mailboxes were also decorated with images of snowmen, snowflakes and gold stars. They play well-known tunes such as “Jingle Bells”, “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” and “Deck The Halls”.
“There’s nothing better than sending Christmas cards to friends and family and spreading a bit of festive cheer,” said London District Councilor Patricia McAllister, who holds the office of Lord Mayor of Westminster, according to the British news agency PA . According to Royal Mail, twice as many letters, cards and parcels are sent in December as in other months of the year. This year, the company is also releasing special stamps for the festive season that are inspired by five traditional Christmas carols.
