Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (36) has had to deal with superheroes several times during his career. In an upcoming Marvel series for the Disney streaming service, he should now apparently become the eponymous main character. As reported by the industry portals “Deadline” and “Variety”, among others, Abdul-Mateen II is supposed to play Simon Williams aka Wonder Man in “Wonder Man”. The character has been around for several decades. Marvel Comics introduced Wonder Man in 1964.
This would see the actor moving from DC Comics to Marvel. He played the villain Black Manta in the 2018 superhero blockbuster Aquaman. He will also appear again in the sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is due out in late 2023. For his role as Dr. Manhattan on the HBO series Watchmen, Abdul-Mateen II also received an Emmy in 2020. The 36-year-old is also known from films such as “Wir” or “Matrix Resurrections”.
So far there is little information about the new series. Destin Daniel Cretton, 43, who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is said to be working with screenwriter Andrew Guest on Wonder Man. In addition, Ben Kingsley (78) will slip back into the role of Trevor Slattery, it is said. It is still unclear when Disney will show the new series.
