More than two years ago, star author J.K. Rowling (57) with anti-transgender views for huge negative headlines and frowns among several “Harry Potter” fans. As is well known, superstar Daniel Radcliffe (33) brought Rowling’s character Harry Potter to life on the big screen in such an unforgettable way – and just a few days after the author’s statements at the beginning of June 2020, he publicly opposed her. In a new interview with IndieWire, Radcliffe looks back on the time and explains why he did it. “I don’t think I would have been able to look in the mirror anymore if I hadn’t said something,” the actor said.
“Harry Potter” star Radcliffe explains in an interview that he has met “so many genderqueer and trans kids and young people” who have identified with the “Harry Potter” book and film series in this regard. “When I saw that they were hurt that day, I wanted them to know that not everyone in the franchise feels that way,” explains Radcliffe, adding, “It was really important.”
Author Rowling attracted negative attention in the summer of 2020 with a whole series of anti-transgender views. Actor Radcliffe had responded to her statements at the time with an open letter that had been published on the website “The Trevor Project”. In it, the 33-year-old wrote: “It is clear that we must do more to support transgender and non-binary people. We should not invalidate their identities and not cause further suffering.”
Radcliffe has been vocal in support of The Trevor Project since 2010, on whose website his reply letter to Rowling was posted. The Trevor Project operates the world’s largest crisis hotline for LGBTQ youth.
