Big blockbusters like “Top Gun: Maverick” or “Avatar: The Way of Water” were among the nominations for the 2023 Golden Globes on Monday – but most of the nominations went to another film. The Banshees of Inisherin garnered eight nominations, including Best Picture – Comedy or Musical. At the latest now you should have the tragic comedy for the Oscar ceremony on March 12, 2023 on the bill.
“The Banshees of Inisherin” is the reunion of the dream team from “Bruges see … and die?”: The main actors Colin Farrell (46) and Brendan Gleeson (67) were again directed by Martin McDonagh (42) in front of the camera .
The director-writer has since worked his way into Hollywood premier directorship with Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The film with Frances McDormand (65) was nominated for seven Oscars in 2018, including best film. McDormand and supporting actor Sam Rockwell (54) took the trophy home.
“The Banshees of Inisherin” is based on a drama written by Martin McDonagh back in 1994. But it was never performed in the theater because McDonagh said he thought it was too bad at the time.
Unlike the predecessor “Bruges see … and die?” “The Banshees of Inisherin” doesn’t take place in Belgium, of course, but in Ireland – the homeland of Farrell, Gleeson and McDonagh. 1923, on the isolated (fictional) island of Inisherin: Colm Doherty (Brendan Gleeson) suddenly ends his long-standing friendship with Pádraic Súilleabháin (Colin Farrell). He is suddenly too dull for him, Colm wants to devote himself to higher things in the future.
The bewildered Pádraic tries to win his buddy back. But he remains firm and threatens to take radical steps. Colm wants to cut off a finger for every advance. The situation is escalating…
The Banshees of Inisherin had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September. Colin Farrell won Best Actor there. Martin McDonagh won for his screenplay.
It could rain more prizes at the Golden Globes. “The Banshees of Inisherin” has been nominated eight times, including Best Comedy. Martin McDonaugh is in the running as both director and screenwriter. Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan (30) and Farrell’s film wife Kerry Condon (39) are nominated in the actor categories. A nomination for music fills the eight.
The Oscars could continue. In addition to Steven Spielberg’s (80) autobiographical drama “The Fabelmans” and the multiverse spectacle “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, “The Banshees of Inisherin” is currently considered a hot candidate for best picture. Gleeson and Condon are currently the top favorites in the supporting actor categories. Colin Farrell appears to have at least one nomination, his first, for sure.
“The Banshees of Inisherin” starts in German cinemas on January 5th.
