After his release from prison, tennis star Boris Becker publicly admitted his guilt. “Of course I was guilty,” said the 55-year-old in an interview with broadcaster Sat.1. He lost on 4 counts – out of 29 he was originally accused of – in court in London. “And it was on the fourth count – when I took funds from my company account – that the jury in London found me guilty.” There were also three other points – for example that he kept his house in Leimen, where his mother lives, secret.

Becker reported feeling hungry while in prison. “Of course I lost a lot of weight,” said Becker in an interview with moderator Steven Gätjen. “I went to prison with 97 kilos and then had almost 90 kilos.”

Becker added: “I felt hungry for the first time in my life, so I went to bed hungry. I thought that at the age of 54 I had already experienced everything, but this was new.” In prison he did not drink alcohol, did not smoke and ate very little for weeks or maybe months. “The prison stay was certainly good for my health.” In the meantime, however, a few kilos have been added.

Becker said of a photo comparison with recordings from before and after imprisonment: “It’s the same person, but they’re two different lives.”

At the end of April, Becker was sentenced to two and a half years in prison by a court in London because he had not properly declared parts of his assets in his bankruptcy proceedings. He was released on Thursday after 231 days behind bars.
