Quantum Racing traced the tactics and almost the results of the first day on the second day of the Rolex TP52 World Championship Cascais 2022 and continues its triumphant path like a steamroller. Owner Doug DeVos’s boat made another two comfortable results with a second and a third to consolidate the leadership of the second race of the 2022 season of 52 Super Series that is held from the Clube Naval de Cascais. The heats of the day were won by Alegre and Platoon in another day of weak winds that were long in coming.
And it is that the first leg was more than three hours late with respect to the scheduled time due to a very light wind.
The head of the Regatta Committee, María Torrijo, wanted to start at 12 noon, but around 12:30 she decided to send the boats to port to wait for the sky to clear and the wind to pick up a bit. And that happened at 3:15 p.m. when the first test of the day started with conditions almost identical to those of the first day: about seven knots from the west.
The first sleeve of the day was identical to the one from yesterday’s premiere. It was the Alegre that dominated the race from start to finish with a start from the left side of the regatta field. Andrés Soriano’s sailboat was escorted by the Quantum that, once again, signed a second place showing its solidity and leaving no room for the rivals to subtract points in the general. The boat has been flawless for a year and is a firm candidate to win the Cascais World Cup.
The start of the first round was eventful since both Vayú and Phoenix were penalized with an off-line. Wanting to start on the left side of the field, the two boats had to settle for the tactic that, in principle, was less considered among the fleet, which was to go to the right. But nevertheless, Cascais surprised everyone and the area closest to the coast was favored at the beginning of the heat. That’s how they went from last to being in the leading positions after a very stretched stretch of the two boats along the layline. But misfortune for Tony Norris’ boat saw him break the spinnaker in the midst of a battle with Quantum Racing for second place near the leeward gate.
The second sleeve of the day was marked by the role of wind in the regatta field. Always tending to the left on the sea side. It was Platoon who best read the first and very complicated beat since there were infinite alternatives in the lead. Harm Müller-Spreer’s boat was already comfortably in the lead after the first beat, taking advantage of a good start followed by Quantum Racing. But the great surprise of this World Cup, the Vayú of the Withcraft family, was able to come back to second position in the final stern and take a shower of happiness since today they go home third overall in the Rolex TP52 World Championship. , something that no one, not even themselves, expected with a boat that is three years older than the rest of the fleet and with a good part of the crew made up of non-professional sailors.
