The Medal Races have today put an end to the Kiel Week, closing with a silver medal the participation of Diego Botín and Florian Trittel in the 49er class. The pre-Olympic team was also present in the 49er FX category, where Patricia Suárez and María Cantero (12th) were the best classified, and in Nacra 17, where Iset Segura and Marcos Fernández (24) stood out.
The competition began a day late in Kiel waters, reducing the qualifying tests to a single day to divide the participating fleets into Gold and Silver groups. The next two days were dedicated to the Final Series regattas to determine the crews that would make up the Top 10 of each class for the Medal Race.
The most outstanding Spanish performance has been that of Diego Botín and Florian Trittel in 49er who, throughout the four days of competition, have shown how, test by test, the performance of the new tandem improves and firmly points towards Paris 2024. The duo Nacional finished the first day in 19th place, rising step by step in the table until they were fourth on the starting grid of the Medal Race, closing their partials with a first place. In the final regatta they once again demonstrated their credentials by taking second position, a result with which they reached the second step of the podium, headed by the Germans Peters and Sterrit, and with the New Zealanders McHardie and McKenzie in third position.
In this class, the Spaniards Andrés Barrio and Antonio Torrado, from the pre-Olympic team, ranked 21st. The crews of the National Plan for Sports Technification also competed: Albert Torres and Elías Aretz (32), Pol Marsans and José Manuel Ruiz (51) , the brothers Martin and Jaime Wizner (63), and Konrad Konitzer and Fernando Rodríguez (65).
In 49er FX, pre-Olympics Patricia Suárez and María Cantero finished in 12th place, while Marina Garau and Carlota García, from the PNTD, were 30th. The victory went to the Germans Sophie Stenlein and Thomas Plöbel.
There was also Spanish participation in Nacra 17, with Iset Segura and Marcos Fernández who finished 24th, and Nicolás Martín and Jill Paland, 25th. The Italians Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti, asserted their recent Olympic gold to win the class. Tara Pacheco and Iago López Marra were registered but finally decided not to attend the competition.
