You are one of the pioneers of freediving. Do you still follow the records today? Only sporadically. I give one or two lectures to aspiring diving doctors every year. To prepare, I’m looking at the current records. Otherwise I have lost interest in this sport and only go snorkeling on vacation.
The film “In the Intoxication of the Deep” with Jean Reno popularized deep diving without breathing aid in 1988. Did he inspire you to take up this sport? Yes, I watched him several times in the cinema, started snorkeling in lakes and diving to the bottom. On a trip to Elba I reached 25 meters with just one breath.
