The new DFB sports director Rudi Völler has announced a personal meeting with his predecessor and a timely solution in the search for reinforcement in the administrative area.
“I spoke to Oliver Bierhoff on the phone a few weeks ago and will be meeting him in Munich shortly,” said Völler on TV station Bild. He wanted to “exchange a bit and find out how the last few years were from his point of view,” explained the 62-year-old: “The fields he had to till were enormous. That was a bit too much, there would have been he can get one or the other man.”
As a consequence, the German Football Association (DFB) is looking for a manager who will primarily take care of the areas of responsibility for academy and youth. Völler has been officially installed as director of the men’s national team since February 1st. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and he will soon be holding talks in consultation with the committees, announced the 1990 world champion and former DFB team boss. “There are some candidates that we will definitely meet with in the next few weeks.”
Flick support
In his role as sports director, Völler wants to “keep his back free” especially for Hansi Flick “with a lot of energy and passion” so that the national coach can only concentrate on the sport and “have nothing to do with side-war scenes”.
Next Wednesday, Völler and Neuendorf are to explain the World Cup debacle to the Sports Committee of the German Bundestag. “I like doing it,” said Völler, even though he wasn’t in a responsible position when he was eliminated from the preliminary round at the World Cup in Qatar. One thing he will also assure there with a view to the home EM 2024: “That we will do everything, DFB and also the league, that we will present ourselves wonderfully as Germany in a year and a half.”
