As a football fan, you know that the last two World Cups were anything but ideal for Germany. Now there is also the official confirmation from FIFA in black and white: The German team fell a few places in the world rankings, and now even Morocco, Switzerland and the USA are ahead of the German national team.
Even before the World Cup, Germany had lost touch with the top nations in football, only ending up in eleventh place in the FIFA world rankings. A good World Cup could have helped to make up a few places – but in the end the early exit caused the opposite: The gap to the top 10 places increased from 16.36 to 45.8 points, Germany slipped into in the world rankings of the world football association FIFA to 14th place.

Despite Argentina’s success, nothing has changed at the top: Brazil still leads the world rankings, albeit with a tiny lead of just under three points. If Argentina had beaten France after 90 minutes, they would have been in first place. Even so, things went up for Argentina: Thanks to their strong World Cup, the Argentinian team was able to pass Belgium and France, who were previously in second and third place.
The strongest winners in the world rankings include Morocco and Australia. Both nations went up 11 places in the list, with Morocco moving ahead of Germany in 11th place. Losers include Wales (-9 places), Serbia (-8) and Denmark (-8).
The calculation of the world ranking is relatively complex and is based on the importance of the game, the result and the strength of the opponent. For example, a friendly game is weighted with 5 points, World Cup games are weighted with a factor of 50 and all games after the round of 16 are weighted with a factor of 60.
