1. FC Union Berlin may have to do without Robin Gosens, who is in top form, in the Champions League duel with SSC Napoli.
“I don’t want to say too much yet. He’s being treated,” said Union coach Urs Fischer before the home game against the Italian champions on Tuesday (9 p.m./DAZN). “But I’m really very positive that things will work out with Robin tomorrow,” he added.
The German national soccer player was actually supposed to appear alongside Fischer at the Köpenick press conference the day before the game. “It’s currently on the table,” reported the trainer, referring to the massage table.
Fischer hat Plan B
If the 29-year-old leading player cannot play in the third group game in the premier class, the Unioners, who have so far been pointless, have a plan B. “The two options we see at the moment would be Paul Jaeckel or Diogo Leite, who would then move from the center to the left side would go,” revealed Fischer. The Berliners almost have to win against Naples in order to keep their chance of overwintering in European business alive.
After three wins at the start of the season, including Gosen’s Bundesliga debut and a brace against Darmstadt, the Iron Men are in a sporting crisis. Eight defeats in a row – that hasn’t even come close under Urs Fischer since 2018.
Fischer “agrees” with Gosens’ performance, but is far from completely satisfied. “He has indicated what he is capable of. He has turned out to be very dangerous in front of goal,” praised the Swiss at first and added: “There are still things he has to work on, especially when it comes to automatism.”
