New York City Mayor Eric Adams has declared a state of emergency as buses carrying migrants from the Texas border arrive in the city. “We are now in a situation where more people are arriving in New York than we can immediately accommodate, including families with babies and young children,” Adams said Friday. The city will have to raise $1 billion for this this year, the mayor said, asking for help from New York State and the US government in Washington. The declaration of a state of emergency allows federal funds to be diverted.
In the spring, Republican governors from Texas and Arizona began having migrants from the border areas taken to Washington, New York and Chicago by bus in order to hand over responsibility to the democratically run cities. A state of emergency was declared in Washington a few weeks ago. More than 17,000 migrants from South and Central America are already in New York, Mayor Adams said.
