Documents labeled “sensitive” about a new British submarine have been found in a pub toilet. The Furness Railway pub is near a BAE Systems shipyard where the submarine HMS Anson was recently sighted. The Ministry of Defense confirmed the authenticity of the papers to the newspaper “Sun” (Saturday).
Accordingly, it is training documents, which would not contain any secret information. “These documents allow submariners and contractors to understand how systems interact. They don’t describe how they work, just that they exist,” the paper quoted a source in the Royal Navy as saying.
The “HMS Anson” set off on her maiden voyage in mid-February in the north-west English town. The nuclear-powered fighter submarine belongs to the new Astute class and costs around 1.3 billion pounds (1.47 billion euros).
It’s not the first time British military records have surfaced in the public domain. In June 2021, a Defense Department employee forgot classified documents at a bus stop.
