Since 1989 and for around 35 years, the yellow cult family “The Simpsons” from Springfield has been providing chaotic TV entertainment. In the more than 700 episodes to date, there have been various lasting changes – including in the latest episode, which celebrated its premiere on US television. In it, a character dies who has been there since season one – but is probably known by name to very few people: the eternal bar stool Larry.
As a constant and mostly silent drinking buddy of Homer Simpson, Barney Gumble and Co., Larry spent his everyday life in Moe’s Tavern – and has done so since his first appearance in the episode “Homer’s Odyssey” from 1990. Well, in the episode “Cremains of the Day”, it’s time to say goodbye to his bar friends and the audience.
According to the description, the balding Springfield resident wearing an orange jacket was 42 years old and had the last name Dalrymple. Although the character Larry has been there almost since the beginning of the series, not much is known apart from his love of beer, his aversion to sunlight and his regular place next to his friend Sam. In the latest episode, his drinking buddies also notice this, who are told by Larry’s mother that they were his “best friends”. In “Cremains of the Day” they go on a road trip and scatter the ashes of their fallen bar comrade.
It is not the first time that a long-standing character dies in the cult series created by Matt Groening (70). Bart’s teacher Edna Krabappel also died, as did Maude Flanders, the wife of Homer’s hated neighbor Ned Flanders. Mafia boss Fat Tony and Homer’s unwilling Las Vegas bride Amber have also died serial deaths.
The animated series is currently in its 35th season. At least one more season has already been decided since the beginning of 2023, so the 800 episode mark will definitely be broken.
