Enthusiasm in Berlin: King Charles III. and Camilla have arrived in the German capital. It is Charles’ first state visit since becoming monarch. From the airport, the two royals went straight to the Brandenburg Gate, where they met Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender.
And it seemed like Charles and Camilla agreed on their outfit choices. He matched her coat and dress with a light blue tie and dark suit. The monarch’s wife’s turquoise outfit is by Bruce Oldfield, the hat by Philip Treacy. The flower brooch that she had attached to her coat was particularly striking.
This once belonged to the late Queen Elizabeth II, who in turn had received it as a confirmation gift from Queen Mary in 1942. Although born in Kensington Palace, Queen Mary had German roots through her father, Duke Franz von Teck.
That the royals set such fashionable accents with which they honor other members of the family is not new. The best-known example is Princess Diana’s engagement ring, which has been on Princess Kate’s ring finger since 2010 after Prince William proposed to her. Far from the only piece of Diana jewelry Kate owns. Kate wore pearl earrings from her late mother-in-law to the 2019 Bafta Awards. And for her visit to Germany in 2017, the Princess of Wales chose a pearl bracelet by designer Nigel Milne, which also belonged to Diana.
Duchess Meghan, on the other hand, chose a ring for the evening celebration after her marriage to Prince Harry in 2018, which once also belonged to Diana. Back then, the bride wore the magnificent aquamarine ring on her right ring finger.
