Star entertainer Stefan Raab (57) wants to know again: After unsuccessfully competing against former boxing world champion Regina Halmich (47) in 2001 and 2007 and even having his nose broken in the process, he is now challenging the athlete again out of here. This time it will be the “Final Fight”, held on September 14, 2024 in front of 15,000 spectators in the arena of the PSD Dome in Düsseldorf. – But who is this woman whose uppercut Stefan Raab obviously can’t get enough of?
Hardly noticed by the public in the first few years of her sporting career, the Karlsruhe native enjoyed a rapid career as a professional boxer from 1994 onwards. After previously becoming German champion three times and European champion once as an amateur boxer, she seamlessly continued this series of success full-time. In 1994 she first won the title of professional European champion in the super flyweight category and the following year she became world champion of the “Women International Boxing Federation” in the junior flyweight division for the first time. From 1995 until the end of her active martial arts career in 2007, she remained undefeated WIBF world champion.
Despite these brilliant successes, the exceptional German boxing talent remained completely unknown to large parts of the public until 2001, as Halmich would later complain in the “FAZ”, among others – the attention was almost exclusively on the boxing battles of her male colleagues. The then reigning world boxing champion finally achieved her big breakthrough as a prominent media figure in 2001 with a spectacular show fight against the TV show host Stefan Raab, which he had asked her to do on his cult show “TV Total”. Despite his victory-conscious boasts, Halmich expertly pushed the entertainer onto the boards in this first fight and, as it later turned out, even broke his nose in the process.
In 2007, as part of an extensive boxing night on ProSieben, a rematch entitled “Return of the Killerplauze” followed, which Halmich was able to win again after six rounds. Just a few months after this tough duel, the boxing world champion finally ended her sporting career on November 30, 2007 in a big farewell fight.
On the basis of the prominence she had gained outside of professional sport, Halmich pursued a career in the years that followed, among other things, as a co-presenter on TV broadcasts of boxing matches, sometimes alongside her challenger Stefan Raab. In 2010 and 2011 she also appeared as the presenter of the weight loss TV show “The Biggest Loser”. Halmich received further media attention when she dropped the covers for “Playboy” in 2003 and 2015.
As “Bild” reported in 2019, the former world champion also earned her living as a fitness trainer on cruise ships. Despite completing his training as a legal assistant, Halmich did not return to this profession. On her website she offers effective full-body fitness training under the title “Box yourself fit”, which is sold on DVDs. She has also written several books in recent years, including an autobiography and a fitness guide called “The Power is Female”.
Regina Halmich has proven that she not only has a hard fist, but also a big heart, among other things, as an ambassador for the German Children’s Fund since 2014. She has also been involved with the “Weißer Ring” association, which is committed to supporting victims of crime , the children’s aid organization “Terre des hommes” and the animal protection organization “Vier Pfoten”.
In 2022, to her delight, the former world-class boxer was once again blessed with two major sporting successes when she was first inducted into the “German Sports Hall of Fame” and, a little later, triumphantly entered the “International Boxing Hall of Fame”.
