Hollywood action meets Formula 1 spectacle: The shooting of the planned film about the motorsport premier class with Brad Pitt in the leading role is really picking up speed at the British racing classic at Silverstone. An eleventh garage is planned, ten for the Formula 1 racing teams this season, the additional one for the fictional team. It will be called Apex.
Pitt is said to be behind the wheel of the modified Formula 2 car, in whose body development engineers from the Mercedes team helped. The route is a good 100 kilometers northeast of London, when the so-called hot laps – taxi rides at top speed in super sports cars – are otherwise driven.
The film is directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Both were also responsible for the box office hit “Top Gun: Maverick” with Tom Cruise. “We have the best producer in Hollywood, one of the best directors in Hollywood, one of the biggest stars and their investment is huge,” Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali told the British “Sun” in an interview.
The Italian and American owners of Formula 1 also hope that the film will bring Formula 1 closer to people who didn’t know about it before. “We have the opportunity to win them over,” said Domenicali, speaking of an immense joint project.
The training and racing events should not be impaired by the film recordings. The Hollywood action will happen around it, Domenicali promised.
Formula 1 wants to open up
With the film, Formula 1 wants to continue on its way of opening up the series to a wider and younger audience. Formula 1 has already reached new fans through the Netflix series “Drive to Survive”, the fifth season of which is running this year.
Despite little sporting variety from the superior Red Bull team and series winner Max Verstappen, the series is experiencing a boom and is also becoming more and more interesting for investors. Recently, Pitt’s Canadian actor colleague Ryan Reynolds and his company joined other investors in the French Alpine team.
