Brendan Fraser was gone. Literally. In the 1990s and 2000s, the actor belonged to the upper ranks of Hollywood stars. The reason was his appearances in the “Mummy” trilogy and various comedies. But then Fraser went quiet.
Last year, the 54-year-old returned with a brilliant comeback – and is now considered one of the hottest candidates for an Oscar.
Fraser previously took home the Best Actor award for his performance in ‘Whale’ at the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday night. In the drama, Fraser portrays an overweight teacher who is unable to leave the house because of his weight.
In his acceptance speech, Fraser alluded to his long absence from Hollywood. “I was out in the wild and probably should have left a trail of breadcrumbs, but you found me,” he thanked director Darren Aronofsky before getting emotional.
With tears, Fraser then appealed to the people in front of the TV sets. “For anyone who is struggling with obesity like Charlie, or for anyone who feels like they are in a dark sea, I want you to know that you too have the power to stand up and come out into the light. And good ones Things will happen,” he said.
There were tears in the eyes of the audience as well. After Fraser’s acceptance speech, his colleagues erupted in thunderous applause. Somewhat surprisingly, Fraser prevailed against Austin Butler. The “Elvis” actor won the Golden Globe for best actor just last week. He is also considered one of the contenders for an Academy Award this year.
But why did Brendan Fraser disappear from the scene in 2008? Fraser himself suspected he was blacklisted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) after he accused the organization’s former president, Phillip Berk, of sexual abuse. In “GQ” Fraser revealed in 2018 how the incident happened. “His left hand goes around me, grabs my ass cheek, and one of his fingers touches my nipple and he starts moving it,” Fraser explained publicly for the first time.
At the time, he wanted an apology from Berk, but didn’t get it. Invitations to awards shows became rare from then on, Fraser withdrew and became depressed. Until Darren Aronofsky hired him for The Whale.
