Even after the corona pandemic, camping is still very popular. However, many people only get their wheels out of the garage in spring or summer. If you dare to do it in winter, you need to know a few things. Because low temperatures and frost can otherwise be fatal.
If you set off in a motorhome in snow and ice, you should definitely have snow chains with you. Winter tires go without saying. In order to be able to stay in the camper in the cold season, a functioning heating system is essential. This keeps the interior nice and warm and prevents the water pipes or tank from freezing. It is also important that the camper or caravan is well insulated.
Campers also use a lot more gas in winter than in summer. Just for the hot water and heating. If you turn on the heating every day, according to the ADAC, an eleven kilogram gas bottle is only enough for three days. So pack enough bottles and find out in advance where you can buy more in an emergency. Thermal mats on the windows can help keep icy air out. A thermal curtain between the driver’s compartment and the living area has the same effect. A little antifreeze can prevent the drain or dishwater from freezing. There are also special sanitary liquids that are already provided with antifreeze. But beware! Never drink this water or use it for cooking.
In any case, pack thick blankets or sleeping bags and think of warm clothes for pleasant nights. It is best to rely on a shift system – even at night. Electric blankets are also little helpers to provide a little more warmth. When it comes to electricity, rely on weatherproof cables. Because then the cold, wet and masses of snow cannot harm the supply. A broom should also be on the packing list so that you can clear the vehicle of fresh snow. Depending on how long you stay, a snow shovel can also come in handy to clear the path.
If you plan on sledding or even skiing on your winter camping adventure, you should think about storage options. Because the wet equipment would cause unnecessary moisture in the camper. An awning or a ski box on the roof would be an option.
