Pete Doherty swapped drugs for French food for his new life in France. In an interview two years ago he raved about Camembert, bread and butter and explained his slightly larger belly. Now Doherty’s lifestyle appears to be having medical consequences.
“Yes, I’m a bit of a glutton. That’s no joke. I’ve been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. And at the moment I lack the discipline to get the cholesterol levels under control,” he said now in a double -Interview with the British “Guardian”. Doherty and his Libertines bandmate Carl Barât talk about their unique collaboration and the old days. “Am I surprised that Peter is still alive? No, he’s too smart to die. He never intended to die,” said Barât about Doherty, who made headlines for his drug use, especially in the noughties.
According to Doherty, he has been clean since December 2019. That’s why he’s still not healthy. “I have given up the biggest poisons and my health has improved. Then you are told that alcohol, cheese and sugar are just as bad and that you were healthier when you were still taking heroin,” said the musician, somewhat resignedly.
Doherty not only caused a stir at the time with his drug use, but his love life was also turbulent. In early 2005 he met supermodel Kate Moss for the first time. The two became a couple shortly afterwards, but worried friends and fans with public arguments and their addiction to strong drugs. Doherty’s time alongside Amy Winehouse will also be unforgettable.
In the documentary “Peter Doherty: Stranger In My Own Skin” (2023) by Doherty’s current wife Katia de Vidas, you can see pictures of Doherty and the late singer. The two of them developed into a love affair from friendship, which, however, was also influenced by their addictions. Winehouse died in July 2011. “I loved her then and I still do today. But towards the end, as only lovers can, she became quite mean and cruel to me,” he told the Daily Mail years ago.
