Telangana CM Engages Stakeholders to Shape Gig Workers Bill

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has taken a proactive approach in addressing the welfare of gig and platform workers by initiating the process to gather public feedback on a proposed draft Bill. The draft legislation aims to provide job security, insurance coverage, and other essential benefits to this growing workforce, marking a significant step towards ensuring their well-being and rights.

Meeting with Stakeholders

In a recent meeting with gig workers, union representatives, and senior officials from various departments, Chief Minister Reddy emphasized the importance of incorporating diverse perspectives in the final version of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Bill. By engaging directly with those impacted by the legislation, he sought to create a more inclusive and effective framework that addresses the needs and concerns of the workers.

During the meeting, officials presented the key features of the draft Bill, outlining provisions related to employment security, insurance benefits, and overall working conditions for gig workers. Chief Minister Reddy urged officials to make the draft available online for public review, underscoring the government’s commitment to transparency and participatory governance in shaping labor policies.

Empowering the Gig Economy

With over four lakh gig workers actively involved in various sectors such as food delivery, transportation, and package delivery across Telangana, the proposed legislation holds significant implications for this workforce. By seeking input from a wide range of stakeholders, including workers, industry representatives, and advocacy groups, the government aims to create a balanced and comprehensive legal framework that promotes fair labor practices and protects workers’ rights.

Recognizing the evolving nature of the gig economy and the unique challenges faced by platform workers, Chief Minister Reddy emphasized the need for close collaboration between companies, aggregators, and workers to ensure harmonious relationships and effective coordination. By setting a deadline of April 25 for finalizing the draft legislation, the government aims to expedite the process and implement the Act by May 1, aligning with International Labour Day.

Reflecting on the government’s commitment to worker welfare, Chief Minister Reddy highlighted the previous order issued in December 2023, which provided a ₹5 lakh insurance cover for the families of gig and platform workers in case of accidental death. Building on this initiative, the proposed legislation seeks to establish Telangana as a pioneering model for protecting the rights and interests of gig workers nationwide.

As the government proceeds with the legislative process, the active engagement of stakeholders and the public will play a crucial role in shaping the final version of the Gig Workers Bill. By prioritizing transparency, inclusivity, and responsiveness to workers’ needs, Telangana aims to set a new standard for empowering and supporting the growing gig economy.
