peaceful-situation-in-violence-hit-murshidabad-police-update

The situation in violence-hit areas of Murshidabad district, particularly in Suti, Samserganj, Dhulian, and Jangipur, was described as peaceful and under control by a senior police officer on Monday, April 14, 2025. Despite the recent unrest and violence that resulted in three fatalities and numerous injuries, there were no reports of fresh incidents in the region. Prohibitory orders under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) remained in effect, contributing to a deserted atmosphere with closed shops and restricted movement on the roads.

Police Updates on the Ground

The police officer, in an interview with PTI, reassured the public of the situation’s stability and the authorities’ commitment to maintaining peace in Murshidabad. With a heavy presence of security forces, including BSF personnel, state armed police, and RAF, patrols were conducted along the main roads and smaller lanes to ensure safety and order. Despite the deserted streets and marketplaces, the police continued their vigilance to prevent any further disturbances.

Arrests and Communal Tensions

Following protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act that sparked the violence, a total of 180 individuals have been arrested in connection with the unrest. The clashes not only resulted in injuries to 18 police personnel but also led to the destruction of vehicles, police kiosks, and shops. The communal tensions in Murshidabad have prompted hundreds of people to flee the district, seeking refuge across the Bhagirathi River in Malda, where local authorities have provided shelter, food, and assistance to those affected by the violence.

The communal divide in West Bengal has been a cause for concern, but the concerted efforts of law enforcement and community leaders have helped maintain peace in the midst of turmoil. The solidarity and support shown to those displaced by the violence reflect the resilience and compassion of the local community in times of crisis. As the authorities continue to monitor the situation and ensure safety for all residents, the hope for lasting peace and harmony remains a shared goal for everyone involved.
