Delhi Airport Terminal 2 to Undergo Last Renovation
Delhi Airport’s oldest terminal, Terminal 2, is set to undergo its final renovation starting Monday night, marking a significant upgrade for the 1986-era building. Airlines such as IndiGo and Akasa will relocate their flights from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 beginning Tuesday, as part of this transition.
Smooth Transition for Passengers
Delhi Airport officials announced that, effective April 15, 2025, all flights currently operating from Terminal 2 will be redirected to Terminal 1 until further notice. IndiGo has taken proactive steps to inform their customers about this shift, reaching out through various channels including SMS, calls, and emails to ensure passengers are well-prepared. The airline advises travelers to check their departure/arrival terminal on the airline’s website or mobile app before heading to the airport, in order to avoid any confusion.
Similarly, Akasa has confirmed that all their Delhi-bound and departing flights will now operate from Terminal 1. While this relocation may cause some inconvenience in the short term, it is necessary to facilitate the renovation of Terminal 2, which is expected to last approximately four to five months. During this period, the second airport in Delhi-NCR at Greater Noida is anticipated to become operational, potentially impacting the passenger traffic at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Enhancing Passenger Experience
In addition to the terminal relocation, Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) is focusing on improving the overall passenger experience by introducing new measures to facilitate seamless transfers between terminals. The proposed Terminal 4 construction has been put on hold, while efforts are being ramped up to expedite the air train project at IGIA, which will connect various terminals within the airport.
Despite the challenges posed by the lack of an air train system, DIAL is working to streamline the process for passengers transferring between T3 (the international terminal) and T1 (the domestic terminal). With the rise in connecting traffic due to expanded flight networks, particularly by Air India group and IndiGo, enhancing transfer procedures between terminals has become a priority.
To alleviate the burden on passengers, DIAL is conducting trials for the smooth transfer of cabin baggage from T3 to T1 for international travelers with connecting flights from Terminal 1. This initiative aims to reduce the inconvenience of re-checking baggage and customs procedures, allowing passengers to drop their luggage at T3 for direct transfer to T1 via the airside.
DIAL’s CEO, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, emphasized the importance of these upgrades in ensuring a seamless travel experience for passengers. He confirmed that the airport has committed to the civil aviation ministry that passengers transferring between T1 and T3 will be able to complete the process within 120 minutes, promising an efficient and hassle-free journey for travelers.
As Terminal 2 undergoes its final renovation before making way for a larger Terminal 4, these developments mark a significant milestone in Delhi Airport’s ongoing efforts to enhance its infrastructure and services for passengers. With careful planning and innovative solutions, the airport aims to provide a world-class travel experience that meets the evolving needs of modern-day aviation.
