Twitter owner Elon Musk is apparently toying with the idea of taking away the Twitter account name from public US radio station NPR if it does not become active again on the online service. NPR stopped posting on Twitter after Musk mistakenly flagged the account as government-controlled and then government-sponsored. In the meantime, all markings on media accounts have been generally deleted.
“So NPR will be posting on Twitter again, or should we give the name @NPR to another company?” Musk wrote in an email Tuesday to a reporter at the network who later reported on the matter. Previously, Twitter account names were reassigned if their owners had not logged in for a long time.
The public broadcasters NPR and PBS in the USA and CBC in Canada had decided to stop publishing new posts on Twitter after the dispute over the false labeling. They did not delete previously posted content. With the removal of all markings from all media organizations, previous reach restrictions for state media such as the news agencies Tass and Xinhua from Russia and China also fell away.
