After the sudden end of the purchase bonus for electric cars, Volkswagen now also wants to pay the subsidy itself. VW will cover the full premium for all eligible ID series electric cars ordered by December 15th and registered by the end of March, the manufacturer announced on Tuesday.

For vehicles that are registered this year, there will be the previously guaranteed bonus of up to 6,750 euros, and for registrations by March 31st, the originally planned reduced rate of up to 4,500 euros. In addition to the manufacturer’s share of 50 percent, VW will now also take over the federal share that has been eliminated.

On Monday, several manufacturers had already announced that they would do a similar thing. The car company Stellantis, with brands such as Peugeot, Opel and Fiat, wants to cover the premium itself until the end of February 2024, and Mercedes-Benz until further notice. Hyundai and the Spanish VW subsidiary Cupra also announced on Monday that they would temporarily cover the bonus for vehicles that had already been ordered.
